Obama urges lawmakers to pass short term measures to avert sequestration

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday urged Congress to quickly pass another short-term round of spending cuts and tax incentives while lawmakers work on a comprehensive budget plan. In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama called on lawmakers to work on comprehensive package that deals with the debt. But he says that takes time. In the meantime, Obama asked lawmakers to move forward with a short-term deal as they continue working on a longer-term solution. Lawmakers face a March 1 deadline when automatic, across-the-board spending cuts, already postponed once, take effect. He warned if the cuts are not averted the consequences would harshly affect the military, middle-class families and the economy. In response, Republicans are calling on the government to focus on domestic energy production by approving the Keystone XL pipeline that would carry oil from Canada to Texas.
