(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) A driver, who allegedly tried to rape a woman inside the lift of her building, faced an attempted rape charge in the Court of First Instance.

According to prosecution records, the 27-year-old Pakistani stalked the victim as she was taking the lift to her flat in the International City. The incident happened in February 2011.

He covered her mouth with his hands, pushed her inside the lift, hugged and groped her and then exposed himself as he tried to take her pants down. She resisted and pushed him out of the lift. She tried to go down, but the lift opened and the accused entered and groped her again but she pushed him out at the third floor when the lift stopped.

She then went to the fourth floor and from there took the stairs down the building where she sought police help.

The complainant, a Filipina in her early twenties said in the investigation that on that night she had come back from a nearby grocery and was on her way to her flat.

She was waiting for the building lift when she spotted the accused entering it and heading towards the lift. She did not take the lift with him and he went to the second floor. She took the lift shortly later and it stopped at the second floor and the accused walked in and groped her.

The woman called the police from her mobile phone. She then reported the incident in person at the Rashidiyah police station.

She helped a sketch specialist to draw a picture of what the accused looked like.

A fourth floor resident in the building testified that he heard a woman shouting 'police police' that night. He said he also saw a Pakistani man rushing out of the lift shortly later.

He then went down through the emergency stairs to the ground floor. He saw the complainant crying and she told him that an Asian man had tried to rape her in the lift, but she could escape from him. The complainant recognised the accused among other suspects at the police station in December last year.

The resident also testified that the sketch was very close to what the accused looked like.
