HTC plans to tap mass Chinese market with cheaper smartphones

(MENAFN) Once a leader in smarthphones, HTC Corp unveiled plans to redirect its focus to emerging markets and introduce lower priced phones in China this year, Reuters reported. The struggling firm is trying to make a turnaround from slumping revenue as it loses ground for Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy series. HTC's fortunes have been declining sharply since the second half of 2011, as the growing global dominance of Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in smartphones quickly deflated the success of its own brand's rapid rise. HTC is trying to set a foothold in China, the world's most populous nation and a rising consumer power, as price-conscious consumers still hinder deeper penetration for premium brands. HTC Chief Financial Officer Chang Chia-Lin said the firm is now ready to offer smartphones priced less than USD320, currently its cheapest phone in China.
