(MENAFN) The latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer showed that the number of tourists visiting the Middle East in 2012 fell by 5 percent; however, the figure is better than the drop of 7 percent recorded in 2011, reported Arabian Business.

The World Tourism Organization said that tourism in the region was still affected by the political turmoil that has been impacting several countries since December 2010, with the region losing 3 million international tourists in 2012.

During the current year, the number of arrivals in the region could be flat, with growth expected to range between 0-5 percent.

Meanwhile, in 2012, Saudi Arabia reported a 14 percent gain in the number of annual arrivals, to become the world's fifth-best performer.

It is worth noting that in 2012, the number of international tourist arrivals rose by 4 percent to 1.035 billion, globally.
