(MENAFN) Chrysler, the US third-biggest carmaker, said that its 2012 profit grew to USD1.7 billion, up from USD183 million a year before, reported AP.

For the current year, the firm forecasts its net income to grow to nearly USD2.2 billion.

The company attributed the notable growth in last year's profit to an 18-percent rise in sales, which reached 2.2 million cars and trucks globally.

Sales in the US, the automaker's largest market, grew notably, driven by robust demand for the Chrysler 200 and 300 sedans, in addition to the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup.

2012's revenue climbed by 20 percent from 2011 to USD65.8 billion, and is projected to reach between USD72 billion and USD75 billion in 2013.

It is worth noting that in 2009, Chrysler filed for bankruptcy and needed a USD12.5 billion loan from taxpayers to carry on its operations.
