Kuwait- Opposition continues protest over election

(MENAFN- Arab Times) Opposition activists, including opposition former lawmakers, continued demonstrations against the one-vote electoral decree Sunday evening amidst the presence of security forces. The demonstration ended peacefully, unlike earlier attempts, after protestors marched from a roundabout in the area of Sabah Al-Nasser to the state's Central Prison and back while security forces monitored the movement. With orange scarves, banners and flags, protesters gathered to reiterate oppositionist demands for what they believe is "a full parliamentary system" and the scrapping of the one-vote election decree and the newly-elected National Assembly. Present at the rally were former MPs Musallam Al-Barrak and Mubarak Al-Walaan and others. Men, women and children marched on the main highway between the areas of Sabah Al-Nasser and Firdous chanting "Freedom with a popular government" and "no to oppressive government". A placard read" "dissolution is the only solution". Protestors also carried placards with the pictures of Kuwaiti citizens Ayyad Al-Harbi and Rashed Al-Enezi who were recently convicted for writing statements on Twitter deemed offensive to HH the Amir. Present at the march were brothers of Ayyad Al-Harbi, Saud Al-Harbi and Abdulaziz Al-Harbi. Commenting to the Arab Times, Saud said his bother is innocent and he considers him a "prisoner of conscience" and pleaded for his release. Another protestor, Nasser, said "the government does not consider the opinion of the people" and that "the parliament does not represent 75 percent of the population". He demanded "the government return to the Constitution". The sixth so-called 'Nation's Dignity' march was invited last week on Twitter. Earlier in the day news circulated quoting security head of the Jahra district, Lieutenant Ibrahim Al-Tarah, as saying that Special Forces will not be present at the demonstration. The news was later denied by the Interior Ministry which warned that it will handle unauthorized marches according to the law. Special Forces and MoI officers arrived to the area prior to the march. Last Sunday, security forces had dispersed opposition protestors at a demonstration in the area of Qurtoba using tear gas and stun grenades.
