Kerala staff strike hits NRKs

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The indefinite strike launched by a section of government employees and teachers led by left service unions in Kerala in protest against the government decision to introduce a participatory pension scheme has hit many non-resident Keralites (NRKs). The NRKs, who came for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas at Cochin from January 7 to 9, with the additional purpose of pursuing office matters have either returned disappointed or have remained stranded in the state with the strike that entered the fourth day on Friday affecting the functioning of various offices across the state. Varghese Panakkal, who came from Al Ain, is waiting for the strike to be over to register a plot of land he has sought to purchase at Cochin. He told the Khaleej Times that he had been visiting the office of the sub-registrar every day from January 8 with the hope that he could complete the process and return to his work. "Though some officials have been attending the office, they are obstructed by the striking staff from transacting any office business," said a distraught Varghese. The situation is likely to turn worse with the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front extending support to the strike. Following the LDF decision, the Students Federation of India and the Democratic Youth Federation of India have joined hands with the striking organisations to make the strike a success.
