The opening week of 2013 has proven exceptionally volatile for the FX and capital markets. It is worth noting to any trader that is interested that the volatility around the opening week of the year was stoked by the fear and relief surrounding the US fiscal cliff – and that it is not fully resolved as the debt ceiling is now a point of contention and has a deadline of approximately mid-February. As for scheduled event risk over the coming week: There are few specific indicators that can be expected to have an inordinate influence over market-wide volatility/activity levels or even their respective currencies (as many pairs are once again focusing on the swings in risk appetite trends). The most prominent event is the ECB’s rate decision on Thursday, which should prove interesting given the December comments made towards rate cuts and reduced growth forecasts.
