(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) GHEDEX 2013, Oman's leading higher education exhibition has invited students to keep up with the latest trends in higher education by attending the event from April 23 to 25 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.Higher education trend predictors are stating that the year 2013 will witness the higher education landscape undergo development in terms of programmes, services, technologies and strategies.The dominant role of traditional institutions will be challenged by the increasing presence of corporate universities and online institutions.Reductions in government funding to public higher education will prompt further competition and student attraction strategies, entrepreneurial partnerships and innovative fundraising schemes by traditional institutions in this regard.There will also be an increase in application of online and mobile technologies by the teaching faculty both in the classroom as well as to facilitate distance learning. Online learning will gain new recognition specifically with the explosion of the MOOC (massive open online course) movement of learning.In terms of the learning population, interestingly, adult learners will become a significant part of the future of higher education with more adults considering career advancement and developments while student learners will shift towards self directed learning strategies.A particularly new phenomenon termed new global regionalism will see an explosion of regional educational institutions gaining prominence among students from that region who will now consider travelling within their home region to pursue their degrees and post degrees instead of seeking the same abroad, thus shifting student mobility from the West to the East.East Asia, the Gulf States, Latin America, Middle East and Southern Europe in particular stand to gain much from this upcoming trend.
