(MENAFN - Arab Times) A huge fire broke out in Souq Al-Hareem in Mubarakiya area and spread to a nearby four-storeyed building, part of which was used as bachelor accommodations.
Director General of General Fire Department Major General Yousef Al-Ansari revealed that the fire damaged 35 commercial stores and offices and resulted in huge material losses, adding that no casualties were reported except a minor case of smoke inhalation sustained by a firefighter.
He revealed that the first fire team reached the location within three minutes after receiving the distress call, adding that the fire was extinguished by firefighters from five fire stations after they evacuated the building and disconnected the electricity. Major General Al-Ansari appreciated the efforts taken by the firefighters for the protection of human lives and properties.
Deputy Director General of General Department for Fire Affairs and Human Resources Development Brigadier Khalid Al-Mekrad appealed to the owners of shops and buildings to adhere to safety and security measures.
High-ranking officials were present at the location along with officials from Ministry of Interior, Medical Emergency Department and Ministry of Electricity and Water.
Meanwhile, the Media Coordinator of Medical Emergency Department Abdulaziz Buhaimed said the department had sent 7 ambulances and 14 paramedics to the location.
He revealed that an Ethiopian laborer fractured his right leg when he fell from a building and he was referred to Amiri Hospital for treatment.
