(MENAFN - Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The UAE's Minister of Environment and Water, Dr Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad, represented President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the inauguration ceremony of the expanded Roseiris Dam in Sudan by Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir.
Ambassador of the UAE to Sudan Hassan Ahmed Al-Shehhi was also present at the ceremony along with representatives of countries and Arab funding institutes.
In a speech at the ceremony, Bin Fahad said the project reflects the strong bilateral relations between the two sisterly countries and a model of development projects backed by the UAE.
He conveyed greetings and congratulations from His Highness Sheikh Khalifa to his president, government and people of Sudan on the occasion of launching the new project.
According to the Sudanese Minister of Water Resources '&' Electricity Osama Abdalla Mohamed Al-Hassan, the heightened Al-Roseiris dam is gives a boost to the development of the country and is the start of a constructing similar projects in other regions.
The UAE, through the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), backed the US441.5 million project which represents a strategically-important structure on the Blue Nile near Ethiopia, 550 km South East Khartoum.
Al- iris dam now stands 10 metres higher with doubled storage capacity to allow additional power generation and agricultural irrigation.
