(MENAFN - Arab News) The Ministry of Agriculture announced yesterday an Agricultural Media Award for the excellent achievements with a focus on journalist skills in the areas of investigation, dialogues, press articles and reports.
The award, sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, is fully funded by ARASCO through a strategic partnership with the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce (RCCI).
Speaking at a press conference held here in the capital yesterday, Mohammad Sulaiman, dean of Community College at the University of Huraiymala and chairman of the Media Award Committee, said the award aims to highlight and support initiatives and activities that serve sustainable agricultural development and food security in the Kingdom.
He added that it would also help support the role of the press in the adoption of vital agricultural issues, to foster a culture of media competition to raise and discuss agricultural issues objectively and to honor outstanding journalists who have made significant contributions in these areas.
The other members of the Awards Committee includes Fahd Al Shehri, director of Corporate Communications at ARASCO, Abdulrahman Al Qahtani, director general of Production and Trade in the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Mohammad Sayyadi, vice president for Research and Development at ARASCO and Fahd Maymoun, director of the Media Center at the Ministry of Agriculture as members.
Sulaiman said that the award, which was introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture, gained a well-deserved momentum through a trilateral alliance between the Ministry of Agriculture, ARASCO and RCCI. He redefined the awards ceremony as a significant media event that will have greater impact on the sustainable agricultural development.
The chairman said that the competition is open to all journalists working in the Kingdom irrespective of their nationalities.
He clarified that the theme of the award focuses on sustainable agricultural development and food security in the Kingdom, and the role it plays in supporting and activating development strategies to realize sustainable food resources and to conserve water, plant, animal and environment resources.
He added that the participants comprise two categories: Corporate Media and Individual Media. The Corporate Media category will honor media organizations that have a positive impact in the field of agriculture at the socioeconomic level, and the Individual Media will honor three winners for the best media work that focuses on a variety of skills of the scribes.
Sulaiman reiterated that the committee will start receiving candidate journalist's works from January 2013 until late December 2013, and the awarding ceremony will honor the winners at a later stage.
He pointed out that the monetary value of the award amounts to SR 100,000, of which SR 50,000 would go to the first winner, SR 30,000 to the second winner and the balance of SR 20,000 will be for the third winner.
Sulaiman expressed his hope that the Agricultural Media Award would contribute to establishing its mission in supporting the agricultural media creativity to sustain agricultural activity and develop supportive policies for the management and maintenance of agricultural, animal and food resources in Saudi Arabia.
He stressed that the award lays the foundation for a constructive partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture, local media and the private sector. He added that the award will also help agricultural activity to grow and develop, by motivating journalists to employ their potentials for creativity and prominence that best serve this sector.
Moreover, Sulaiman hoped that the award would contribute to enhance the Kingdom's food security and preserve its water resources through the development of supportive policies and professional agricultural practices that foster the management of agricultural, animal and food resources.
He added that the award serves as a channel of communication between the media, the Ministry of Agriculture and the private agricultural sector to better serve agricultural issues, policies and strategies adopted by the state and to raise the public awareness on the importance of these issues.
