(MENAFN) Two Gulf carriers have won licenses from the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) to operate flights in the Kingdom, reported Arabian Business citing Bahrain Press Agency.
The two airlines, Qatar Airways and Bahrain's Gulf Air, are the first non-Saudi carriers to operate domestic and international flights in the country; however, they will still need to confirm the procedures to get licenses in a period that doesn't exceed 6 months.
The firms were among 14 carriers that submitted applications to GACA, and were among the companies in pre-qualified consortia bidding for the license, in addition to Bahrain Air.
Saudi Airlines and budget airline National Air Services (NAS) are the only carriers that operate domestic services in the Kingdom at the current time.
According to GACA, the number of passengers who passed the country's 27 airports jumped 13.6 percent in 2011 from a year earlier to exceed 54 million passengers.
