(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) Nearly 5,000 vehicles are being recalled by General Motors in the UAE, mainly Chevrolet models manufactured between 2007 and 2010 because of suspected defect in the brake pedal.

The US car maker has launched a service campaign for 2007-2010 Chevrolet Captiva, Aveo, Optra, Epica, Spark and GMC Terrain.

In coordination with the Ministry of Economy " Department of Consumer Protection and in line with the commitment of the Ministry of Economy to conduct an ongoing review of all products in the UAE to provide the consumer with the required protection, General Motors announced the campaign for 4,900 vehicles last month.

"The safety recall for certain models of Chevrolet and GMC is currently undergoing," a spokesman for General Motors in the UAE told Khaleej Times on Friday.

A small number of General Motors vehicles may experience long brake-pedal travel under very rare conditions, he added.

Models included in the service campaign are 2007-10 Chevrolet Captiva, 2007-09 Chevrolet Spark, 2009-10 Chevrolet Aveo, 2007-08 Chevrolet Optra, 2008-10 Chevrolet Epica, 2008-09 GMC Terrain.

Customers, who own these models are being contacted by General Motors dealers in the country, he added. There are three dealers for General Motors in the UAE namely Bin Hamoodah Auto for Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, Al Ghandi Auto for Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah and Liberty Automobiles for Sharjah and Al Fujairah.

Earlier this year, there was a massive recall by General Motors for 2007-2010 certain Chevrolet models in the United State. But the automaker confirmed at that time Chevrolet Malibus sold in the Middle East are unaffected because they are equipped with a different transmission, a six-speed automatic transmission.

In September this year, General Motors recalled 426,240 Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn sedans in the United States to repair a condition in which the transmission gear position may not match the gear on the shifter, which could lead to the vehicles rolling when drivers think they are in park.

Affected vehicles were certain 2007-2010 Chevrolet Malibus, Saturn Aura and Pontiac G6 models, all with four-speed automatic transmissions.

In a latest move this month, General Motors announced that the company is recalling 118,800 2010-'12 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks in the US market because the hood could open unexpectedly.

The year 2012 witnessed a record number of recalls globally by different car manufacturers as millions of vehicles were recalled during the year.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries.

Chevrolet has a strong heritage in the Middle East - stretching back more than eight decades. The Chevrolet portfolio includes passenger cars, crossovers SUVs and pickups, from the Camaro and Corvette performance cars, to award-winning passenger cars including the Spark, Sonic, Cruze and Malibu, to crossovers like the Captiva and Traverse, to Colorado and Silverado pickups.
