(MENAFN) Kyrgyzstan government has agreed to sell gas company Kyrgyzgas to Russia's Gazprom in 2013, as it struggles with a crippling energy crisis, Reuters reported.

Kyrgyzstan's northern gas imports from Kazakhstan have sputtered due to piling debts, resulting in tens of thousands of residents of the capital Bishkek suffering night temperatures at minus 20 Celsius.

Kazakhstan supplies 50,000 cubic metres of natural gas per hour to Kyrgyzstan at USD224 per 1,000 cubic metres. Neighboring Uzbekistan supplies 8,700 cubic metres per hour to southern Kyrgyzstan, charging USD290 per 1,000 cubic metres.

Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev wants Gazprom to invest no less than USD500 million in modernising its gas transportation network and prospect for natural gas.

In September, Moscow agreed to write off nearly USD500 million in Kyrgyz debts in return for a package of military and energy deals with Bishkek.
