Kuwait- Closing of sat TV station slammed

(MENAFN- Arab Times) The chairperson of Alumni Association Saud Al-Anzi denounced the decision by Ministry of Information revoking the license of Al-Youm Satellite TV Channel. He considers this action and arrest of opposition elements as trampling on constitutional liberty, reports Alam Al-Youm daily. He said "its unfortunate the ministry implemented such cruel action against the TV channel only because it opposed the government's stance, noting people will begin to contemplate the act as unwillingness on the part of government to take contrary opinion". He reiterated the association is against any restriction of freedom of expression for or against the government, and "we've already taken a similar position against the proscription of Scope TV and suspension of some daily newspapers". On the contrary, MP Nabel Al-Fadhel affirmed the decision to revoke the license of Al-Youm TV was based on violation of regulations, so the Ministry of Information had no option than close it down. Al-Fadhel stressed he was upset by the decision initially-as a journalist, "but after investigating the issue, it dawned on him that the channel had actually erred". He explained the ministry had cautioned the channel many times with series of warning letters, but there was no change of the attitude. He reiterated, "in this case, we have no option than encourage application of the rule of law on everybody without exemption."
