(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Nine people including two bootleggers were recently arrested when ROP raided three illegal bars in Ruwi. A large quantity of alcohol was also seized. Residents of the area, who had earlier complained about the existence of these outlets, have heaved a sigh of relief following the raids.''We had complained to ROP many times about the den, which had brisk sales of illegal alcohol throughout the day, from 8am to midnight,'' said Kasim, a resident of the area. ''It was extremely difficult and unsafe for women to even walk on those roads.''According to him, the bars even served alcohol in plastic bottles as part of their 'take away' service, and hundreds of people visited them, sometimes forming long queues outside.Muhammed Issa, another resident of the area, added that the bootleggers even had to hire security men as there were many instances of fights. ''Thankfully, things are back to normal now,'' he said.''A few plainclothes policemen had investigated the bars and the raids were carried out based on their tip-off,'' an ROP?official said. Four pick-up vehicles used to transport alcohol were also seized during the raids and cases have been filed against the accused.
