(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) Dubai Duty Free's 29th anniversary on December 20 has recorded daily sales of Dh76.91 million (21 million) in the 24-hour period.
A special 25 per cent discount offer to mark the operation's 29th anniversary resulted in a spending spree at Dubai International Airport that began at midnight on 19th December and continued throughout the day until midnight on the 20th.
Commenting on the anniversary day sales, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice-Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, said: "We are very happy to have achieved Dh76.91 million in a 24-hour period. I would like to thank everyone for helping us achieve such sales, in particular thanks to our customers for supporting our anniversary day and our staff who do a great job."
"We began introducing a discount offer across a wide range of merchandise on our 20th Anniversary in 2003 and it has become a popular day with travelers, some of whom book their flights in order to shop on that day," added McLoughlin.
The statistics for the day highlight the huge volume of sales that passed through the cash points within the 24 hour period.
From a category point of view, Perfumes was the highest selling category with over 58,000 bottles sold amounting to Dh20.5 million (5.6 million) while Watches and Clocks came in second place with sales of Dh17.8 million (4.9 million). Cosmetics came in at third place, category wise, with sales of Dh7 million (1.9 million).
Other notable increases were seen in Electronics, which rose by 23 per cent to Dh4.5 million ( 1.2 million), Confectionery, which rose by 37 per cent representing 134,000 units sold amounting to Dh3.2 million (889, 000), and Delicatessen rose by 17 per cent to Dh1.5 million (425,000).
