Belarus President Fires Factory Bosses For Incompetence After Tour

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has fired managers at a garment factory that had once been a showcase of the country's industry, citing "incompetence" and threatening more sackings in his government if there was no turnaround. Shortly before entering the factory earlier Monday, Lukashenko, often referred to as Europe's last dictator, had said he was aware of problems at the factory. "If the president doesn't go into the shop and get into the production processes, then he isn't the president," he said, before firing a series of managers. "Windows are broken, women are working, this is a travesty," he said. Of the 7,000 employed at the factory, only about 900 are believed to be productively working. Lukashenko also threatened to fire members of his cabinet over the situation at the Kamvol works. Many Belarusian businesses are sagging under the weight of foreign loans.
