Kuwait- Water supply cut eyed for defaulters

(MENAFN- Arab Times) The Ministry of Electricity and Water plans during the second phase of its action plans to cut water supply for defaulters who have failed to pay overdue bills believed to be more than KD 10,000, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily. Minister of Electricity and Water and Public Works Eng Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim was recently quoted as saying the ministry is determined to collect all overdue bills from consumers. He went on to say the ministry will resort to cutting off electric and water supply if consumers fail to settle their bills and refer them to the judiciary. He pointed out these products are highly subsidized. He disclosed the cost of electricity per watt is 27 fils and the consumers pay the government only 2 fils. He added every one 1,000 gallons of water cost the treasury KD 8.450 while consumers pay only 800 fils which means the State bears 95 percent of the total cost of electricity and water while the consumers pay only five percent. Meanwhile, employees of the Ministry of Electricity and Water, since Sunday, have been disconnecting the power from some buildings in Salmiya area for roughly five minutes daily to perform periodic maintenance activities on some secondary transformers in Hawalli and other governorates during the next few days, reports Al-Seyassah daily. An official source said the ministry is determined to embark on massive maintenance works on its facilities steadily. He explained the maintenance operation that began Sunday will cover other governorates until Thursday, in line with stipulated plans. He indicated the exercise will enhance performance in full capacity and the power output. He revealed that the ministry will replace some cables that are no longer effective at the power stations, especially now that the high consumption period is over. He stressed the maintenance works will prevent unnecessary power failure the next summer season, indicating the period of short disconnection will be around 7:30am until 12:30pm in Salmiya blocks 2, 3 and 6.
