(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Nine domestic teams, comprising expatriates and top Omani hoopsters, are likely to be in action in the fourth edition of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI)-Companies Basketball Competition (CBC), which begins at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on December 29.The popular championship, which is organised by Shams al Tafani Trad Est (STTE) in coordination with the Oman Basketball Association (OBA), will be played on a round-robin basis.According to Nadir al Bahrani, executive director of the STTE, six teams have confirmed their participation so far, while three more are likely to join.Bahrani said, We have top clubs from the domestic league, like Nizwa, Ahli-Sidab and Oman, taking part in this competition. The clubs have joined hands with various companies to participate in the event. The tournament has also become popular with the expatriate community.?We already have a Filipino team, while an Indian team has approached us. We are happy with the way the event has grown over the past few years.Bahrani, who is a former national youth team coach, said, We are getting good response from the companies. This is an ideal platform for them, not only to market their brands, but also to support  sports, particularly, basketball.Newly-elected OBA general secretary Assad al Hassani said, The matches will be held on Sundays and Tuesdays. The new rules allow the teams to field three non-resident players each. The top domestic clubs, however, can register just one non-resident player."The championship will help the OBA promote the sport, and we are keen to hold it annually, said Hassani, who won the OCCI-CBC title as a coach in 2009 and as team manager in 2011.Bahrani said, The tournament helps raise funds through sponsorships, which then helps us in supporting young Omani players in academics and sports. In a way, we are giving something back to the community through this competition.Teams (confirmed): Nizwa Club, ORPIC, Oman Cement Company (Ahli-Sidab), FPI (Future Pipe Industries), Oman Air, Moka & More.
