Romania's Christmas sweet bread defies economic gloom

(MENAFN- AFP) Sales of Romania's Christmas sweet bread "cozonac" are expected to grow this year, reaching up to 22 million euros ($29 million) despite a struggling economy, the industry said Tuesday.

"More than seven million 'cozonac' should be baked this year by industrial bakeries, a five-percent rise compared to last year", Aurel Popescu, the head of Romania's bakery-owners association told Mediafax news agency.

Despite importing a growing number of Western European food products since the fall of the Communist dictatorship in 1989, Romanians have remained faithful to the sweet bread baked by local bakeries.

Every year around Christmas and Easter, Romanians queue in front of bakeries or supermarkets to buy their "cozonac", a sweet bread with chocolate, nuts or pieces of Turkish delights.

The news came was a shot of Christmas cheer in a country where the average salary remains one of Europe's lowest at 350 euros and household demand is sluggish.
