Kuwait- Hefty fines sought to curb accidents, prevent deaths

(MENAFN- Arab Times) The General Traffic Department has finalised a study on toughening penalties for those who commit serious traffic violations, reports Al-Shahed daily. The study will be submitted to the Minister of Interior for approval before it is sent to the National Assembly for approval. According to reliable ministry sources the fines differ according to the type of violation. For example, the sources said people who jump the red traffic signal will have to pay KD 250, reckless drivers and those driving against the flow of traffic will end up paying KD 200 and those parking their vehicles in slots designated for the physically handicapped will have to pay KD 150 while those speeding will have to pay double the current fine. The sources pointed out however, doubling of traffic fines is a popular demand, especially after seeing an increase in road deaths and the rate of disability resulting from traffic accidents. The sources revealed Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs Major-General Mustafa Al Zu'abi has adopted an ambitious traffic plan to place traffic patrols on all streets of Kuwait. He has requested the ministry to provide him sufficient manpower and modern vehicles to successfully control the traffic movement.
