(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Khalid Soomar clinched the double-leg fourth round of the Oman Rally Championship 2012, which concluded at the Sur Sports Complex on Friday.Driving a Mitsubishi Evo 7 along with co-driver Mohammed al Wardi, Soomar edged past Khalid al Minji in a thrilling race that comprised ten stages, including two on Thursday and eight special stages on Friday.Soomar clocked 50m03s to win the title while runner-up Minji, who drove a Mitsubishi Evo 8 along with Saif al Aisri, had a timing of 51m49s. Mohammed al Omairy and co-driver Mohammed al Mazroui in a Subaru Imprezza finished with a time of 58m40s to take the third place.A total of nine teams took part in the rally, but only five could complete the two-day event. One car retired during the super special stages on Thursday while another three quit on Friday.Soomar said after the win, ''It was a very tough competition and I am happy to have won. I am now looking forward to the fifth and final round in Muscat that will be held on December 14.''Organised by the Oman Automobile Association (OAA), the special stages on Friday were held in the Qasah (16km) and Ayoon (10km) areas.Earlier on Thursday, Minji was the fastest after two stages and was followed by Soomar. Overall leader Hamed al Wahaibi, who drove a Muscat-designed Yaris, ended fifth but retired on Friday following a mechanical problem.H E Salem bin Mohammed al Nuaimi, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Transport & Communications, gave away the prizes in the presence of Brig (retired) Salim Ali al Maskiry, the OAA's chairman.Maskiry said, ''The staging of the rally in Sur is part of our efforts to popularise motor sports across the sultanate and we are happy with the response the event has generated in Sur.''We are also keen on stressing the need for road safety through various programmes held on the sidelines of the rally.
