(MENAFN - Qatar News Agency) The Greek government has rejected a request by the International Monetary Fund on reducing the number of public administration employees in the country.

The Greek Finance Ministry said in a statement that the government was surprised over the demand of the fund, which came several hours before the crucial meeting during which the fate of the upcoming payments will be determined according to the economic rescue programme signed with the European Union.

The statement pointed out that the fund demanded the lay-off of 22 thousand jobs in the public administration sector until the end of 2014, pointing out that this requirement has not been discussed before and has not been addressed in the previous Troika creditors talks.
