Sharjah Book fair worth looking forward, UAE paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The success of this year's Sharjah Book Fair speaks volumes about the hard work put in to organise the event. About 385,000 titles from more than 920 publishers in 60 countries were on offer at the fair which saw 135,000 people visit it in the first three days, commented a local daily. It also suggests that people still love to read books. With the availability of electronic books, it was feared that the printed form would be outdated and find no takers. The success of the fair has proved this wrong, Gulf News noted in its today's editorial. Events like this encourage people of all ages, particularly children. Giving them an early start with reading will help them improve their knowledge base and keep abreast of what is happening around the world. Reading is an active mental process, forcing the reader to think and analyse for himself. It improves creativity and keeps the reader well-informed. Ultimately, society stands to benefit from a population that is well-versed with the happenings around the world. Book fairs like the one in Sharjah are events that are worth looking forward to, the paper concluded.
