(MENAFN) European Union's (EU) statistics bureau Eurostat announced that in September, the EU's trade balance posted a shortfall of USD16 billion, up from USD13.8 billion in 2011's same period, reported Xinhua News.

The agency said that although the figure widened from a year ago, however, it was less than the USD16.8 billion deficit reported in August.

In the month, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 1.5 percent from a month earlier, while imports grew by 1.7 percent.

As for the euro zone, in September, the region's trade balance recorded a surplus of USD12.5 billion, up from USD2.2 billion in last year's same month.

It is worth noting that the one-currency bloc posted a decline of 1.1 percent in its September seasonally adjusted exports and a fall of 2.7 percent in its seasonally adjusted imports.
