ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting Kicks Off

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) opened their meeting in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, on Saturday. Ahead of a series of summits starting on Sunday, the foreign ministers are thought to be discussing the territorial disputes involving some ASEAN members and China. Some member countries, including the Philippines and Vietnam, are at odds with China over the sovereignty of some islands in the region. During their last meeting in Cambodia last July, the foreign ministers of the ten ASEAN countries failed to narrow differences in their position. The meeting ended without issuing a joint statement for the first time since the establishment of the association 45 years ago. Prior to Saturday's meeting, ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said he hopes for cooperation in resolving the issue.
