UAE- Companies fined for flouting safety rules

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The national fire safety and protection campaign started by the Ministry of Interior, has fined 76 companies and workshops for ignoring the fire safety regulation and conditions. The initiative was started under the instructions of Lt-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minster of Interior. Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Sharjah Civil Defence, said that the violations in these companies could cause massive fire and loss of lives and property. The violations included improper storage of goods in the warehouses, lack of installing fire protection equipments, failing of renewing fire safety maintenance contract with companies, workers living in workshops, accommodation of workers inside factories or warehouses, failing of storing flammable material, exposing gas cylinder to high temperatures, lack of ventilations and failing of maintaining emergency exits and installing partitions and additions in the premises without licence from the municipality and civil defence. He explained that the campaign inspectors, since last March, had intensified inspections in 10 industrial areas of the emirate to prevent fire during the summer time. The inspectors visited 6,000 establishments, factories, warehouses, workshops, offices and labour accomodations. Starting this month, the inspectors' team would visit 18 industrial areas, based on the schedule prepared to inspect all industrial areas in a short time. Brig. Al Suwaidi, said that the inspectors' team, beside inspection, is also distributing fire safety awareness booklets to all establishments and workers to educate them about the violations which could cause fire during the summer time. The campaign has also come up with new fire safety conditions to prevent fire accidents, such as not allowing workers to live or stay on the site after working hours, providing proper lighting and not accumulating waste around the premises of the factory.
