(MENAFN - Qatar News Agency) A military trainer jet crashed in a mountainous region in northeastern South Korea on Thursday, but it was unclear if there are any casualties, police said.

The T-50B plane went down on a mountain in Hoengseong, about 90 kilometers east of Seoul, and sparked a fire at the scene, police said. Firefighters are trying to get the blaze under control, according to South Korea's News Agency (Yonhap).

One pilot was aboard the plane, but his fate is unclear, though officials said rescue workers found what appears to be a parachute about 70 meters from the crash site. Police and rescue worker are searching the area.

It was one of two planes that took off from an air base in nearby Wonju. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
