(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) Arab League and European Union foreign ministers on Tuesday pledged to support the National Coalition of the Syrian opposition, and welcomed their recent steps to unite their ranks.
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told a meeting in Cairo that his country would support the efforts of the National Coalition of the Syrian opposition towards reconciliation and ending violence, according to a report of DPA.
The meeting comes a day after the Arab League recognized the National Coalition of the Syrian opposition as 'the legitimate representative of the Syrian people's aspirations.'
In a statement issued ahead of the meeting, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton welcomed the formation, named the National Coalition.
'The EU has continuously called for the Syrian opposition to form an inclusive and representative common platform and thanks Qatar and the League of Arab States for their continued efforts,' Ashton said.
