(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Oman Air Racing Team driver Ahmad al Harthy was presented with the winner's trophy on Saturday after a victorious campaign in the Pro-Am1 class of the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship. He received the trophy during the annual championship awards at Whittlebury Hall near Silverstone, UK.The Muscat-based racer sealed the 2012 crown last month with a race to spare, notching up an impressive tally of 12 race victories and 17 podium finishes in all last season.''It's nice to finally get my hands on the big trophy,'' Ahmad said. ''We worked so hard as a team this year to win the championship. My car was perfect throughout the year. I honestly couldn't have asked for more from the guys who run the Oman Air Racing Team.''To win the title with one race to spare was more than I thought possible at the beginning of the year. Taking so many wins and podiums has simply been amazing.''With the 2012 success, Ahmad also became the first person of Arab origin to win a major international racing title of this stature.''The awards evening was a wonderful occasion, very prestigious and in a great setting too,'' the 31 year old Ahmad said. ''The Porsche Carrera Cup GB is an amazing championship and it makes me immensely proud to have won the Pro-Am1 title for everyone back home in Oman."This victory is, of course, important for me personally, but even more so for my country.''Ahmad was also presented with a Porsche 911 Carrera 2 road car for the coming year as the current champion. ''Getting this Porsche 911 has been the icing on the cake,'' he said.
