Shell closes Nigeria pipeline due to oil leaks

(MENAFN) Royal Dutch Shell PLC announced that its subsidiary has closed a pipeline in Nigeria as a result of oil spills, reported AP. The oil giant said that the leak in the pipeline, located in the country's oil-rich southern delta, resulted from oil thieves. The shutdown of the Imo River trunk line would reduce daily oil output by nearly 25,000 barrels per day (bpd). The company added that since the start of 2012, 25 out of 26 oil leaks on the Imo River have occurred due to sabotage, releasing around 3,000 barrels into the river and other water channels. It is worth noting that in 2011, Shell's oil output in Nigeria reached around 800,000 bpd.
