(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Yemeni government announced here on Sunday that it planned to establish three power plants that would run on gas in Al-Hudaida, Ma'aber, and Balhaf areas in order to cover the country's huge electricity deficit.
Minister of electricity and energy Dr. Saleh Samea has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the State Grid Corp of China (SGCC), which stipulates the Chinese company to also build conversion plants, and extends lines to transport gas from Safer in the Marib region to Al-Hudaida and Bahlaf, Ministry of electricity said in a press statement.
Under the MOU, the ministry would provide feasibility study on the projects via an investment company, as a third party, and that coordination is to be conducted between the Yemeni-Chinese sides as soon as possible as a prelude to transfer to implemental steps.
Each station's generating ability would be around 400 to 750 MW as the Chinese company would insure training and preparing Yemeni cadres to manage the three plants.
Yemen suffers from a major deficit in electricity sector, in which productive ability is no more than 1,500 MW as it urgently needs to produce 3000 MW.
