(MENAFN) The Pentagon announced that it has received a request from both the UAE and Qatar to acquire USD7.6 billion worth of Lockheed Martin missile-defense systems, reported Arabian Business.
The Pentagon said that the two Arab countries plan to lessen their reliance on US forces and reinforce their ability to respond to any apparent threats in the region.
As for the UAE, the potential sale includes equipment consisting of 48 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missiles and 9 launchers, worth nearly USD1.135 billion.
On the other hand, Qatar's order includes the possible purchase of 2 THAAD fire units, 12 launchers and 150 interceptors, in addition to other military equipment worth around USD6.5 billion.
In 2011, the UAE inked an order for USD1.96 billion of THAAD weapons systems.
It is worth noting that Lockheed Martin is the Pentagon's number-one supplier by sales.
