Hard to say goodbye?

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) IF YOU grew up during the 90s, you must surely remember the excitement you felt when Boyzone released a new single, or how you spent a great deal of time simply deciding who your favourite Spice Girl was. The 90s - undisputedly the heyday of pop music - witnessed a glut of boy and girl bands, and music lovers just could not get enough of them. Every time N'sync or the Backstreet Boys released a music album, there was a mad rush at the music stores worldwide to purchase them. The 90s spawned countless band-obsessed teenyboppers worldwide. But the boy and girl bands that shot up to the dizzy heights of popularity back then had to pay the price of fame. Intra-band disagreements and jealousies led to the premature breakup of many popular bands like 'Take That' and 'Five', much to the great disappointment of their fans. However, at a time when the music industry was thriving, it seemed like a rational move for individual band members to pursue solo careers. In fact, many of them, like Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating and Justin Timberlake, were able to have successful careers after leaving their respective bands. However, the golden age of pop surely came to an abrupt end with the rampant popularity of the Internet in the new millennium. If it was the video that killed the radio star in the 70s and 80s, it was definitely the Internet that killed the recording artist due to online piracy. And due to the easy availability of the most popular singles online, people don't have an interest in buying entire music albums any more. This has been nothing short of an absolute disaster for many recording artists. Thus most of the famous artists of yesteryears have fallen into oblivion. And many of the once-famous bands of the 90s are trying to resurrect their flagging careers by uniting again - albeit at times just for a single album or concert. But many superstar musicians of the previous decades have failed to compete with the eccentric videos and auto-tuned melodies of new artists like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Nevertheless, they will still be remembered for creating the generation of original lovers of pop.
