(MENAFN) Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority's (Jafza) Deputy CEO, Ebrahim Al Janahi, stated that the 6,700 firms based in Jebel Ali Free Zone make up 20 percent of Dubai's economy, reported Gulf News. Al Janahi said that 170,000 people work at these companies, of which 135,000 workers are directly sponsored by the firms based within the Free Zone. This workforce comprises around 12.82 percent of the emirate's total 1.32-million labor force. He added that Jafza contributes with nearly USD16.33 billion to Dubai's USD81.88 billion gross domestic product (GDP). It is worth noting that in 2011, the number of large industrial firms in Jafza reached 593, representing a rise of 4.5 percent from 2010, with 34 new industrial companies joining the zone in the period.
