(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) A man who has been arrested for the horrific murder of a senior urologist while he was at work at Ahalia Hospital had been the doctor's patient for the past three months, the hospital says.

Hospital medical administrator Indu Chudan said the Pakistani man suspected of murdering Dr Rajan Daniel in his clinic on Thursday evening had been receiving treatment for a urinary disease for three months.

"The suspect visited the doctor last week and came for a follow-up on Thursday again. He murdered the doctor at around 6pm with a knife he carried with him. We know there were no knives in the doctor's room where he was alone at the time of the crime," he told Khaleej Times.

Chudan added there was no indications that anything was amiss while the doctor was being murdered in his room.

"Another patient, who was waiting outside to see the doctor, saw the door handle move to open and so he rushed to the room for his turn. But he encountered a man with a knife in his hand, and clothes soaked in blood, running out. All the other patients sitting in the waiting hall screamed and shouted. The security staff and two to three other people caught him, and called the police who immediately came and arrested the culprit," he said.

He added that Dr Daniel, who had worked at the hospital since 2007, was found lying on the floor in a pool of blood, with a deep cut on his neck. The death of the doctor was also confirmed by the Abu Dhabi Police, saying an investigation was under way to find the cause.

The news of the doctor's murder by a patient hailing from Pakistan's northern tribal area, and identified as Ajmal, spread like wildfire in the neighbourhood of the hospital located on the busy Hamdan Street.

N Mohammed, who lives in an apartment across the road, called Khaleej Times with the news at about 8.30 on the night of the crime, but hospital and police would not give the newspaper confirmation of the incident at that time.

Speculation and rumour had already begun, with residents hearing multiple versions of the motive that lead to Dr Daniel's brutal murder. According to one version, the patient killed the doctor because he had kept him waiting for long. Chudan said he had heard the many rumours circulating, but it was too soon to know the exact reason for the murder.
