(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) A motorist who was performing the popular stunt called 'drifting' on an open stretch of road in Suwaiq ploughed into a crowd of onlookers, killing a man and injuring nine others including a four year old child.According to local residents and witnesses, the motorist was arrested on the spot following the incident that occurred on October 27, the second day of Eid al Adha. The deceased has been identified as Mazin Tuaib al Salhi, a resident of Qarha village, while the unnamed accused is a 23 year old resident of Khabbat al Numan village.''The injured were first taken to Suwaiq Health Complex,'' an official at Suwaiq Police Station said. ''Some of them were later transported to hospitals in Sohar and Rustaq. Five sustained moderate injuries while the remaining four had minor injuries.''Residents of the area said that the incident took place at Rahamat, an open area that is regularly used for drifting'.According to Hussain al Ajmi, a witness who claimed to be one of the organisers of the stunt 'event', the accident happened after around 100 spectators broke through the safety barrier. ''A few of them were hit by the drifting car,'' he said.Ajmi added that the stretch of road where the incident occurred is being closed temporarily. "It will be closed until a safer operation can be set up," said Ajmi. "We have been organising drifting sessions for two years and asking for an official arena, but no action has been taken so far.''
