Japan Airlines' Net Profits Fall 14% Amid China Tensions


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Japan Airlines Co (JAL) on Friday reported that its net profit in the July-to-September quarter declined 14% from a year earlier, after a territorial spat between Tokyo and Beijing. The net profit was 72.8 billion yen (907 million dollars), down from 84.7 billion yen in the same period last year. The company also logged an operating profit of 80.8 billion yen billion yen for the period, down 10.2% from 89 billion yen a year ago, while sales edged up 0.7% to 347.5 billion yen. Tens of thousands of seat reservations have been cancelled amid anti-Japan protests in China after Japan's purchase of disputed islands in the East China Sea, which are also claimed by Beijing and Taipei. On September 19, JAL was relisted on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in the second-biggest initial public offering (IPO) this year worldwide after Facebook and one of the most successful corporate turnarounds in Japan in recent years.
