Sony to shut plant, slash 2,000 jobs

(MENAFN) Sony Corp. announced that as part of its restructuring program, the company would shut a plant in central Japan and slash 2,000 of its workforce, reported Khaleej Times. The firm, which posted a loss of USD5.7 billion for the business year that ended in March, said that the plan is expected to save USD385 million. It added that the Minokamo plant's 840 workers, who make lenses for digital cameras, lens blocks and mobile phones, would see their functions transferred to other factories. It is worth noting that nearly half of the 2,000 job reductions would be in non-manufacturing support jobs.
