(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Oman Air Racing Team driver Ahmad al Harthy was crowned the Pro-Am1 champion in the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship at Silverstone on Sunday, with two rounds to go in the season. The Omani racer secured convincing victories in rounds 17 and 18 to wrap up the title in his class, becoming the first Arab to win a trophy in the British racing series. The 31 year old has had a tremendous season so far, taking his victory tally to 12 and the podium count to 16.He goes into the season's last pair of races at Brands Hatch in a fortnight with the crown already under his belt, while Oly Mortimer and Derek Pierce fight for the runner-up finish.Mortimer is currently in second place with 103 points while Pierce is on No 3 with 93.This is absolutely incredible, Ahmad said after Sunday's impressive show. I have been working hard for this and everyone in the Oman Air Racing Team has done an amazing job. Winning the Pro-Am1 championship is a dream come true and an important moment for all my supporters back home in Oman. The Muscat-based racer dedicated the title victory to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the people of Oman, his family and sponsors.I love Silverstone. To be able to get two wins this weekend was exactly what we wanted and to wrap up the championship with dominant victories is special, he said.Starting round 17 on pole position after a fog delay, Ahmad didn't get the launch he wanted because his grid slot was on a damp section of the track. He first slipped to third place, but regained lost ground and eventually grabbed the lead to leave the rest of the pack behind. Pierce and Victor Jimenez gave some stiff competition. In round 18, Ahmad began on pole again and made a great start to maintain first place throughout the contest. He finished the race ahead of runner-up Pierce with a neat 12-second margin. He also posted the fastest Pro-Am1 lap of the race.Ahmad said, It has been an amazing year, now I can go to Brands Hatch without any pressure of the championship. We can focus on fighting hard and winning the last two more races to cap the season on a high note.Rounds 19 and 20 will he held at the Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent on October 20-21.Overall standings: 1 Ahmad al Harthy (159 pts), 2 Oly Mortimer (103), 3 Derek Pierce (93).
