(MENAFN) UnitedHealth CEO, Stephen Hemsley, announced that the US largest health insurer would pay USD4.9 billion to acquire a 90-percent stake in Brazil's biggest health insurer and hospital operator Amil Participacoes SA, reported Reuters.

Hemsley said that the agreement comprises Brazilian tax benefits worth nearly USD600 million, raising the effective equity purchase price to around USD4.3 billion.

He added that his company sees a high potential growth market in Brazil, due to its expanding economy, emerging middle class and progressive policies toward managed care.

It is worth noting that Amil's founder and CEO Edson Bueno and partner Dulce Pugliese will hold the remaining 10 percent stake in the company for at least 5 years, slashing their stake from 70 percent.
