Wahaibi wins third round of Oman Rally


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Hamed al Wahaibi, driving his Mitsubishi Evolution 10, clinched the top honours in the third round of the two-day Oman Rally Championship 2012, organised by the Oman Automobile Association (OAA), that concluded in Nizwa on Friday.Wahaibi and his navigator Stephen McAuley of Ireland finished the race in 1h18m33s ahead of runner-up Khalid Soomar and co-driver Amer al Zadjali (1h23m21s) in a Mitsubishi Evo 7.Khalid al Minji and his co-driver Saif al Aisri (1h32m42s) took the third spot in their Mitsubishi Evo 8.The duo of Faisal al Rashidi and co-driver Waleed al Rashidi (1h39m04s) was fourth, and the fifth and last place was grabbed by Qassim al Zadjali and his navigator Eihab al Zadjali (1h43m53s). The last two drove a Subaru Impreza.A total of 11 drivers took part in the rally that covered a distance of 203km. Four drivers pulled out due to mechanical problems. The rally covered 119.7km in special stages while the remaining 83.3km comprised standard road section.The rally was flagged off at the Nizwa Sports Complex on Thursday by chief guest Tariq Yousuf al Shammas, acting general manager of Target LLC.The second day's rally began at the Nizwa Sports Complex on Friday morning and took the drivers through stages at Birkat al Mouz and Hay Aturath.H E Sheikh Khalfan al Naabi, advisor at the Ministry of Sports Affairs, gave away the prizes to the winners in the presence of Salim al Maskary, chairman of the OAA.
