Bahrain's Batelco seeking state support for network development

(MENAFN) Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) is seeking contribution from the government for building a fibre telecom network throughout the Gulf Kingdom, Reuters reported. CEO Rashid Abdullah estimated the total cost of the project to reach USD106.09 million. Fibre allows for higher bandwidth and network speeds, therefore it is important for the government in its efforts to develop its telecoms infrastructure as part of a national plan. He added that (if and how) the state will support the nationwide project is under discussion with its officials. Batelco is also waiting for the telecom regulator to announce how it will sell spectrum for next-generation, long-term evolution (LTE) mobile networks. Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority expects to issue licenses for LTE, or 4G services, by the first quarter of 2013.
