(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Oman Karting Team's Sanad al Rawahi had a good start to his 2012-2013 campaign at the UAE Rotax Max Challenge Series on his debut in the Max DD2 class. He finished runner-up in the opening race in his class at the Dubai Kartdrome on Friday.Sanad's younger brother, Abdullah, had a forgettable outing though. Debuting in the Senior Max class, he qualified third after finishing tenth in the heats and was pushing for a podium finish during the race when mechanical problems in his go-kart forced him to withdraw midway into the action. Abdullah was at fifth place on lap ten when he pulled out, with four laps remaining. The UAE Rotax Max Challenge Series opener, which included sprint races, boasted some of the strongest grids seen at the venue in several years, including some top European drivers. The Max DD2 class included the DD2 Masters category for the first time.Belgian champion Xen De Ruwe won the event on his Dubai Kartdrome debut. He qualified from pole and proceeded to make it a hat-trick of wins, taking the heats, pre-final and final. Chasing De Ruwe all day were Sanad and Maurits Knopjes, who finished third in the title defence. After the runner-up finish, Sanad told Muscat Daily, ''It was the most challenging race to start the season. I enjoyed every lap of the race day. The DD2 class this season, with its big grid and top drivers, will give me the opportunity to learn from the best."I am determined to do well in the championship despite having limited experience in DD2. I am happy to finish second behind De Ruwe, one of the top European DD2 drivers. I enjoyed racing with him.''Abdullah said, ''I did my best all day, but sometime things don't go your way - and that's racing. I have 12 races to take part in the series, my goal is to win my first Senior championship this season. I will work hard and with the support of my sponsors, I am sure good results will come.''
