UAE- Man jailed for threatening post on Facebook

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  A 33-year-old man on Sunday was sentenced to three months in jail followed by deportation by the Court of First Instance for threatening to kill a woman co-worker if she did not marry him, in a message that he posted on a social networking site. The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal. The defendant, an electrician from Sri Lanka, is accused of using Facebook to threaten the 24-year-old Filipina waitress, after she rejected his marriage proposal. He is also believed to have solicited the help of other Facebook users to help him find a way to kill her and also allegedly sent her a text message with the same threat. He was charged with threatening to commit a crime through the Internet. The Jebel Ali police arrested the defendant in April and his laptop was seized. During the investigation, the accused said that he had met the complainant about two and a half years ago and they had been in a relationship for about one year. He alleged that he lent her Dh1,000 and she did not repay him the same and had also started ignoring his calls. He, however, admitted to posting on his Facebook page that he wanted to kill her and had asked people how he could do it.The complainant told the prosecutor that she and the defendant used to work in the same hotel in Abu Dhabi and that the latter proposed to her but she turned it down. However, he kept on insisting and harassing her to marry him. She later got to know from a friend that the defendant had posted on his Facebook page that he wanted to kill her and had asked others to help him find a way to do the same. A Filipina staff supervisor, who works in the same hotel where the defendant and the complainant worked, testified that in March when she logged on to Facebook she saw the threat posted on his page.
