Makkah plans to establish USD640m solar energy project

(MENAFN) Saudi Mayor of Makkah, Osama bin Fadl Al-Bar, stated that the city plans to set up a solar energy project worth USD640 million, reported Arabian Business, citing Saudi daily Al-Eqtisadiah. Al-Bar said that the aim of the project, which will have the capacity to produce nearly 100MW of electricity, is to meet rising energy demand in the municipality. He added that the project is expected to trim around USD585 million of Makkah's electricity bill. He noted that about 20 international consortiums comprising 100 firms would compete for the implementation of the project, which will span over an area of around 2 million sqm. It is worth noting that the winning contractor will choose the location of the projects, and will buy the piece of land and then return it to the city's authorities at the contract's close.
