High hopes pinned on outcomes of III ASPA Summit


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) High hopes are pinned on outcomes of the Third Summit of Heads of State and Government of South American-Arab Countries (III ASPA Summit), to be hosted by Peru from September 30 to October 2 in the capital, Lima. With the participation of 34 countries; 12 South American and 22 Arab (excluding Syria and Paraguay), the Summit is held with the coordination and support of the Arab League and Union of South American Nation (UNASUR). ASPA is a forum for policy coordination between countries in these two regions, and a mechanism for the cooperation in the field of economy, culture, education, science and technology, preservation of the environment, tourism and other topics relevant to the sustainable development of those countries and contribute to world peace.. There will also be a special meeting on South American and Arab journalism for press and media personnel in both regions. More than 400 Arab and South American business leaders are also expected to show up. Many world leaders and heads of government have confirmed personal attendance, including Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Ecuador's Rafael Vicent Correa Delgado, Guyana's Donald Ramotar and Uruguay's Jose Mujica. List of prominent Arab leaders includes King Abdullah of Jordan, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Emir of Qatar Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki. Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah will head Kuwait's delegation to the Summit. The first ASPA Summit was held in Brasilia, Brazil, in May 2005, while the second took place in Doha, Qatar, in March 2009. The Lima Summit was scheduled to be held in February 2011, but was postponed due to the Arab Spring uprisings. Earlier this month, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru Rafael Roncaglioglo underscored that the upcoming South American-Arab Summit was a "golden chance" for two emerging regions with a common ambitions.
