Cuba to enhance agriculture sector

(MENAFN) Cuba's Minister of Agriculture, Gustavo Rodriguez, stated that in order to boost the country's agriculture sector, Havana would set up a number of plants to produce biofertilizers and biopesticides, reported Xinhua News. Rodriguez said that Labiofam, the island's most vital group devoted to the production of biotechnological products for agriculture and medicine, would construct the factories. He added that the project, which would provide the country's 350,000 farmers engaged in food production with biofertilizers and biopesticides, aims also to maintain yields, import substitutes and protect the environment. It is worth noting that each year, Cuba imports 80 percent of its food, with a bill ranging between USD1.5 billion and USD2 billion.
